Community interviews provide an authentic, inquiry-based approach that connects classroom learning with students’ lived experiences while strengthening relationships between schools and their local communities. This interactive webinar introduces community interviews as a practical, teacher-friendly strategy for promoting language development, cultural responsiveness, and community engagement.

Participants will be guided through a step-by-step protocol for designing and implementing community interview projects in their own classrooms. The session will feature ready-to-use resources, examples of student work, and practical strategies for adapting the project across grade levels and instructional contexts.

The webinar will also include collaborative brainstorming time, during which participants will develop a classroom-ready community interview project tailored to their students and local contexts. Participants will also learn how to adapt their projects for submission to the NYS TESOL Student Projects Contest (submission deadline: September 20), providing students with an authentic audience for their work while celebrating multilingualism, community engagement, and meaningful learning.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with concrete tools, resources, and an actionable plan for fostering meaningful school–community partnerships through community interviews.
