Trauma Informed SEL Support for English Language Learners with Dr. Jordan González

Description:
This webinar will provide a review of the data in developing an understanding of the traumatic stress that ELLs are currently experiencing, with special attention to the COVID-19 pandemic, unaccompanied minors, refugees and forced migration, and the Afghan evacuees. The workshop will also review the effects traumatic stress has on the developing brain, in learning and within school classrooms. Participants will be introduced to classroom practices, strategies and resources that can mitigate and be responsive to ELLs who are experiencing traumatic stress. Participants are asked to bring with them 5 post-its notes or 5 index cards and a pen to this webinar.

Dr. Jordan González is a researcher, educator and advocate for Multilingual Learners. He currently serves as the lead resource specialist for the Long Island Regional Bilingual Resource Network (L.I.RBERN), where he provides technical assistance, professional development, and support to school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties as it relates to English Language Learners. He participates in NYSED taskforce committees for the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) including the NYS Seal of Biliteracy Taskforce and the ELL Graduate Rate Taskforce. As part of his advocacy efforts, Dr. González serves as the Long Island Delegate for the NYS Association for Bilingual Education (NYSABE). Lastly, Dr. González is as a TESOL faculty member at St. John’s University where he prepares the next generation of K-12 teachers for certification and ELL instruction. His research interests include feedback in second language writing development, language and literacy instruction within culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, and ELL educational policies. Prior, Dr. González was a NYCDOE high school Spanish and English as a New Language Teacher (ENL) teacher and also served the Director of Language Acquisition for Yonkers Public Schools.
